Word Recognition

A Word Wall is an important element in fostering word recognition.



The Word Wall with some of the High Frequency Words.

 

It is essential to provide students with multiple reading and writing experiences to facilitate their knowlegde of high frequency words.

Read Alouds using texts with sight words were used to assist students with the Sight Word- help.

This text by Nigel Croser and Rhoda Irene Sherwood was read to students during a Read Aloud.



 

Additional exposure to Sight Words was given with a poem, "Help Me".
The poem was read whole class every morning during the week. This ensured that the sight words were reinforced. Students were given individual copies to read with their peers and with the teacher.



The poem used with Sight Words and others with the Long a Vowel sound.

Students also engaged in writing activites. Students were able to demonstrate understanding of the use of the Sight Words in context.
